The music heard in Angel is a pleasant blend of pop, original, rock and indie music. Darling Violetta, which is an alternative rock group, composed the opening theme of the show. Earlier they had worked upon a couple of songs for the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which happens to be the parent show to Angel.
A year after the third season of Buffy, the production at Angel, asked out for submissions of demo theme music to be used in the series. For inspiration, the bands were given the idea of “Cello-rock” and “dark superhero ideas”. Darling Violetta, studied all the episodes of Buffy where Angel was a crucial element, like the “Two”, “Becoming, Part One” and “Passion” etc to derive inspiration for their work, which was later deemed to the most suitable and apt one by Joss Whedon.
Using heavier acoustic instruments like the cello, the theme music of Angel has a lighter tempo than the one used as the Buffy’s theme music. The whole thing, actually worked out well for a show which is all about a vampire from Ireland of the 18th century, who is on a track to salvation.
The band then created a longer and detailed version of the Angel theme in 2005, which was named as “The Sanctuary Extended Remix” and this was enlisted in the original soundtrack of the show as well, which was named: Angel: Live Fast, Die Never.
Caritas, which is the demon karaoke bar, is considered to be a famous cult pop hit. The soundtrack album of the show, Angel: Live Fast, Die Never, had scores made up exclusively for the series by Robert J. Kral and featured four songs from the show as well as the remixed version of the theme song.
The thirty - three episodes of the fourth and fifth season of Angel had scored by Douglas Romayne who teamed up with the lead composer for the show, Robert Kral.
